Wringler, 2024

Specifications

Neon light mounted on wall.
35 x 35 cm
Description At first sight, this neon work might resemble a start or cheery sun. It is in fact based on the pattern of holes formed in the wringer of a mop bucket. This mundane but necessary object is transformed into a symbol of brightness. The neon sun will glow when the university cleaners are on shift and go dark when they are off shift, a reminder of the work going on across the campus at different times of the day. José created the illuminated wringer after conversations involving the idea of people’s labour sometimes feeling like it goes ‘down the train’. Text by Miranda Stearn, curator at the Peter Scott Gallery.
